Most days, I hike off trail with my dogs several times per day. With my adult dogs, hiking is a primary part of our relationship.
In my experience, there are four types of hiking dogs. I’m sure there are more, but mine fall into these categories.
The Ranger
Better get out the GPS collar, because the Ranger is going to head out hundreds of feet or even a mile or more. The Ranger checks-in infrequently. My boy Hawkeye is a ranger. I love the excitement and enthusiasm he exudes when he’s exploring our woods.
The Orbiter
Runs orbiting paths around the hiking party. Short range orbiters stay close at hand, medium range orbiters come in and out of view. Long range orbiters are pretty much Rangers. Most orbiters check-in frequently. My girl Josie is an orbiter. I love watching her use the woods as her own personal agility course.
The Trailer
Follows the hiking party by a few dozen feet. Trailers are good hiking companions that keep guard on the party’s flank. No need for the trailer to check-in, she’s always there over your shoulder. My LGD are trailers. I love knowing that they’re back there keeping an eye on things.
The Scout
My favorite type of hiking dog. The Scout is an extension of the hiking party. Whereas the Ranger and the Orbiter are mostly into pleasing themselves on the excursion, The Scout is working for the party. She’s her human’s eyes and ears. She Checks in with a great frequency and provides little burden of dog management to the hike. My girl Sugar is a scout. From field to forest, Sugar is always seeking to please me.
Do you have another type of hiking dog I haven’t met?
